Predications for the Future of Health Care Technology
Ever wonder what innovative technology will be available next in health care industry? Sean Mehra, HealthTaps head of products and health entrepreneur, shares his predictions for the future of health care technology.
Here are some of Sean’s predictions about where health care technology is headed:
We will see a democratization of medical knowledge
Traditionally, medical knowledge has been passed down from generation to generation. We have published encyclopedias but they remain in print and unavailable to the majority of the masses. What happens when these encyclopedias become user‐friendly and interactive? Or when a doctors’ wisdom is accessible to everyone?
As technology trends spread, medical knowledge will allow clinicians worldwide to interact with each other and improve the overall quality of health care.
A transparent meritocracy amongst doctors
What if doctors could rate each other on skill level, education and reputation?. A score that combines meaningful indicators such as the impact of their clinical research and academic publications, the number of patients referred to them, and the caliber of their medical training. If consumers had access to a single score that captured a doctor’s professional reputation as determined by other doctors, they could the more educated decisions.
Consolidated patient information
Despite the increasing prevalence of electronic health records, the storage of patient information is stuck in the days of the Wild West. Patient information is kept in non‐interoperable data repositories, from EMRs to health devices, managed by different parties, and stored in various formats.
Favorable regulatory forces are pushing for standards (like the “Blue Button”) that make health information easily retrievable for patients to empower the savvy healthcare consumers. It’s only a matter of time before a platform emerges that can aggregate and safely store patient information in one place.
The opportunities at the intersection of health and technology will enable humanity to create health and wealth on a global scale — seizing huge business opportunities while generating tremendous positive social impact for everyone, everywhere.
